Cal Makes It Two Straight With 11-3 Win Over Nevada

BERKELEY – The California baseball team (2-0) made it two straight victories to start the season with an 11-3 win over Nevada (0-2) on Saturday at Stu Gordon Stadium. The Golden Bears erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the first inning, while Cade Campbell (2-3, 2B, HR, 4 RBI) was the big bat for the second straight day, and Gavin Eddy and Cole Clark combined on a five-hitter in each of their Cal debuts.
"Scoring seven in the first inning gives us the opportunity to lean on the game a little bit with our pitching and be able to be more aggressive," head coach Mike Neu said. "But I thought we tacked on really well, too. We were able to score single runs in four innings the rest of the time and that ended up being really big.
The Bears, who scored 11 runs in their final three innings on Friday, picked up right where they left off with their seven spot. Jarren Advincula and PJ Moutzouridis started the rally with back-to-back singles before a key fielding error by Nevada second baseman Junhyuk Kwon on a potential double play ball hit by Max Handron loaded the bases with no outs. Dominic Smaldino plated Advincula and Moutzouridis with a two-run single before a single by Jacob French reloaded the bases. Ryan Tayman was credited with an RBI when he was plucked before Campbell doubled down the left field line to score all three runners and put the Bears ahead, 6-0. Advincula doubled in his second at bat of the inning to score Campbell and chase Nevada starter and losing pitcher Alessandro Castro (0-1).
Cal would tack on single runs in the second, fifth, sixth and seventh frames on a Tayman sacrifice fly, a solo homer by Campbell, an RBI-groundout from Smaldino and a sacrifice fly from Chris Gwynn.
Eddy, who missed the 2024 season due to injury, pitched the first 4.0 innings and allowed only one run and two hits, while striking out four over 56 pitches. Clark (1-0) earned the victory with 5.0 innings of relief work, giving up two runs and three hits, while striking out three and throwing 58 pitches.
"I thought I was going to be really nervous, but what I felt was blessed today," Eddy said. "The coaching staff gave me a once in a lifetime opportunity by allowing me to stay here, develop and be under this staff for a year. To finally be able to play and represent the team and be here with the guys made me really blessed."
Cal had five players with two hits for the second consecutive game with Campbell (2-3, 2B, HR, 4 RBI) and Smaldino (2-3, 3 RBI) leading the way. Advincula (2-4, 2B, RBI), French (2-4) and Moutzouridis (2-5) also had two hits apiece.
Jayce Dobie (2-4, HR, 2 RBI) accounted for a pair of Wolfpack runs with his two-run homer in the sixth, while the other Nevada in the second came when Eddy uncorked a wild pitch that plated Taylor Holder.
"We played great," head coach Mike Neu said. "We pitched well and that kept us in the game early, then once our offense got comfortable we had some great at bats and got a chance to separate … It was a team effort. A lot of guys contributed which is always fun to see."
Cal and Nevada return to Stu Gordon Stadium for the third contest of a four-game set on Sunday. First pitch is at 1 p.m. PT on ACCNX/ESPN+.
