Williams Named ACC Gymnast Of The Week
Bears Earn Sixth Conference Honor In 7 Weeks
Three event titles and four podium finishes earned senior
Maddie Williams of the No. 6 California women's gymnastics team the ACC Gymnast of the Week award, the conference announced Tuesday.
Williams is the fourth different Golden Bear to earn the honor this season and Cal has won it six out of seven weeks, including the past four.
The Vacaville native led Cal to its fourth score above 197 of the season last Friday night, posting a 197.050 at the Metroplex Challenge. The Bears defeated Utah State (196.475) and Texas Woman's (195.375) to claim the session one trophy.
Williams tied her season-high with a 39.475 to earn a share of the all-around title with teammate
eMjae Frazier. She split the balance beam title with four other gymnasts, scoring a 9.875, and won the uneven bars outright with a 9.925. She added another 9.9+ routine on the final rotation of the night notching a season-high 9.925 on the floor exercise that contributed to Cal's second highest event score of the season (49.600). The Bears are now the third-ranked floor team in the country.
Williams heads into the eighth week of the season ranked 14
th in the nation in the all-around, 18
th on the uneven bars, and 23
rd on the balance beam.
