No. 18 Cal Falls To No. 6 UCLA After Battle In Westwood

LOS ANGELES – The 18th-ranked California women's tennis team got singles wins from Jessica Alsola and Greta Greco Lucchina on Sunday at the Los Angeles Tennis Center, but the Golden Bears ultimately lost to sixth-ranked UCLA 4-2.
Cal's record fell to 1-2 after the nonconference match, which was originally scheduled to be played Saturday in Berkeley but was moved to Los Angeles due to rain in the Bay Area. UCLA is now 3-0.
The Cal pair of Mao Mushika and Katja Wiersholm posted a big win in doubles, upsetting UCLA's fourth-ranked Olivia Center and Kate Fakih 6-3 on court one. But the Bruins sandwiched wins on courts one and three around the Cal victory to take the doubles point. UCLA clinched the point when Bianca Fernandez and Elise Wagle defeated Cal's 48th-ranked Lan Mi and Berta Passola Folch 6-4 on court three.
The teams traded results over the first four singles matches. With Cal trailing 2-0, Alsola prevailed over UCLA's Ahmani Guichard 6-3, 6-4 on court four to make the score 2-1. Later with the Bears down 3-1, Greco Lucchina, a freshman playing in her first match in Westwood, topped Fernandez 6-4, 6-3, and the Bears clawed back to within one of the Bruins at 3-2.
The match came down to a pair of three-setters. With Cal's 81st-ranked Berta Passola Folch leading Center 4-3 in the third on court five, 63rd-ranked Mi fell to 53rd-ranked Wagle 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 on court two to wrap up the match.
"First off, we would've played this match at home as we had planned, but the weather had other ideas," Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. "I'm just happy we were able to get the match done in L.A.
"It was a very competitive match. We had opportunities in the doubles. As is usually the case when we compete against UCLA, the doubles point is important. Jess had a good solid win and Greta had a good solid win. We're going to continue to work on closing out games and closing out matches. This is only our third dual match, and we definitely have some stuff to work on when we get home."
The Bears' next match is slated for Feb. 21 at USC.
