Defense Shines As Cal Wins Again
3rd Double-Digit Victory In Last 4 Games
IRVINE – The No. 4 California women's water polo team earned its third double-digit victory in four tries on Friday, shutting out No. 16 UC Santa Barbara (9-6) in two separate quarters in a 17-3 win to open the Barbara Kalbus Invitational.
The three goals allowed set a new opponent season-best for the Golden Bears' (9-0) defense. They have now won by more than 10 goals five times in nine games this season.
Seniors Elena Flynn and Rozanne Voorvelt led all players with three goals each. Junior Lindsey Harris and freshman Miriam Bogacheko both scored twice. Sophomore goalkeeper Talia Fonseca finished with nine saves, one shy of a season-high.
Picking up where they left off in last Saturday's win, the Bears opened the scoring on a 6-on-5 by Flynn a little over two minutes in. Bogachenko made it 2-1 several minutes later off an assist by sophomore Julianne Snyder, who finished with a season-high three helpers in the game. Voorvelt scored on the Bears' final two possessions of the quarter to make it 4-1 at the end of the period.
Cal blew the game open before halftime, outscoring the Gauchos 6-0 the second. Flynn struck twice to begin the quarter, first on a power play and then off a long pass by Fonseca. Bogachenko, Harris, Abbi Magee and Voorvelt all scored after that, with Voorvelt clinching her second hat trick in three games before the break. Voorvelt now has 12 goals on the season, tied with Janna Tauscher for third-most on the team.
Snyder took a pass from Rosalie Hassett early in the second half and put away her lone score of the day to give the Bears their first double-digit lead at 11-1. Snyder assisted Kate Meyer on a goal two minutes later to make it 12-2.
Freshman center Ester Varró improved her goal-scoring streak to three games with a goal early in the fourth. Holly Dunn and Tauscher wrapped things up with goals in the final minute.
Cal moves on to face the winner of Hawaii and Indiana Saturday at 9:20 a.m. PT in the quarterfinal round at Anteater Aquatics Complex.
