Li Recognized By CGA For Pommel Horse Dominance

Cal’s Anchor Named National Specialist Of The Week

One day after being named the MPSF Specialist of the Week for the first time in his career, California men's gymnastics' Aidan Li has received an even more significant honor as the College Gymnastics Association (CGA) has named him its own Specialist of the Week. Unlike the MPSF awards, which only consider gymnasts from Oklahoma, Stanford, California and Air Force, the CGA's pool consists of athletes from all 15 NCAA teams.

Li's win is just the third all-time in the "specialist" category by any Golden Bear, following former teammate Will Lavanakul (pommel horse) in 2021 and current teammate Jasper Smith-Gordon (vault) in 2023. The reigning Canadian champion and All-American scored 14.650 on pommel horse at The Big Flip at Stanford on Sunday for the highest score in the nation that weekend, out-doing second place at the meet by eight-tenths of a point to mark his third straight event title.

"Pommel horse is an event that has the potential for so many deductions, but Aidan has worked hard to build and maintain the quality of his routine," head coach JT Okada said. "It's just so consistent and precise, and that's what makes it truly elite."

Li's next appearance for the Bears will be Saturday against Air Force in Colorado.
