CARSON - The California lacrosse team headed down to Southern California for a neutral site game against Marist University on Monday and secured a 14-10 victory at Dignity Health Sports Park. Cal has now won all but one nonconference game this season.
Cal held Marist scoreless for the first five minutes of the game until Chloe Birkhead, one of Marist's top scorers this season, converted on a goal. But the Golden Bears (4-5) answered with goals by Courtney Wong and Avery Hoeft to take a 2-1 lead. The Red Foxes responded and led 5-2 at halftime.
Marist still led 7-5 midway through the third quarter before the Bears were able to turn the game around with six goals in a row to take an 11-7 advantage early in the fourth. Emily Moes and Kennedy Mason contributed two goals each during the run while Ashleigh Masterson and Alyssa Studdert also found the back of the net.
Moes finished with a career-high five goals to give her a team-best 22 on the season and finish one shy of Mason's season-best six goals against UC Davis in the Bears' season-opener. Cal returns to ACC play on Friday with a visit to No. 13 Duke. First draw is scheduled for 2 p.m. PT.
