Cal In Hunt At Arizona Thunderbirds Intercollegiate
Second-Round Play Suspended; Bears In Second Place
TUCSON, Ariz. – Senior
Charlie Berridge owns a share of the individual lead and the California men's golf team is just two strokes off the team lead through 36 holes played at the Arizona Thunderbirds Intercollegiate. The conclusion of the second round was suspended due to darkness and will be completed Tuesday morning, but Cal had already completed the round prior to play being halted.
The Golden Bears (-3) will enter the final round of play trailing only Arizona (-5) after shooting 283-290 (573) on Monday at Tucson Country Club.
Cal's contingent was dialed in from the start, as four Bears were under par at the 10th hole turn during the first round. Berridge – who's only blemish on a six-birdie opening round was a double-bogey on 15 – ended the first 18 holes atop the leaderboard at 4-under 68 and was closely followed by freshman
Ziqin (Eric) Zhou (-3) and graduate
Wenliang Xie (-3), the latter playing as an individual.
Freshman
Kai Hirayama, making his debut in the Cal lineup, holed three birdies on 10, 14 and 15 to finish the first round at even par (72). He ultimately fell back with a second-round 76 and will start the third round tied with redshirt senior
Kuangyu (Tony) Chen (78-70 – 148).
The second round got off to a rockier start for the Bears with 10 front-nine bogeys or worse, but strong finishes by the trio of Berridge, Zhou and Chen kept Cal in contention. Berridge was 2-over through his first 15 holes in the second round before carding three straight birdies to end his day in a tie for first place at 5-under (139). Zhou (-2) currently sits inside the top 10 as well.
Xie was unable to complete hole 18 of his second round prior to play being suspended. He will resume the hole Tuesday morning before starting the third round.
