Barry Weiner Named To USA Gymnastics Hall Of Fame
2-Time NCAA Champion Coach, 2023 Cal Hall Of Fame Inductee One Of Six In 2025 Class
Former California men's gymnastics head coach Barry Weiner has been named as one of six new inductees to the USA Gymnastics Hall of Fame, as announced by USA Gymnastics on Wednesday. He is the third head coach in program history to receive this honor, following Hal Frey (ind. 1970) and Chuck Keeny (ind. 1975).
Established in 1959, each class is composed of top athletes, influential coaches and other impactful contributors to the sport of gymnastics. The class of 2025 will be inducted Saturday, Aug. 9, in New Orleans during the Xfinity U.S. Gymnastics Championships.
"I'm thrilled to become a member of the USA Gymnastics Hall of Fame," Weiner said. "This lifetime achievement award means so much to me."
Weiner, who led the Golden Bears to back-to-back NCAA titles in 1997-98, is a two-time National Coach of the Year, a five-time West Region Coach of the Year and an eight-time MPSF Coach of the Year. For his success, he was tabbed as an assistant coach for the U.S. Men's National Team at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. He was presented with the Honor Coach Award in 2009 and was named the USA Gymnastics Men's Artistic Coach of the Year in 2010.
"Barry motivated me to be a tough competitor," interim head coach
Bryan Del Castillo, who competed for Weiner as a Cal gymnast, said. "He found unique ways to challenge me and encouraged me to fix every imperfection. As a result, I always felt confident when saluting routines at competition. He set high expectations and let me know when I wasn't meeting them. Barry helped me grow and I'm grateful to have had him as my coach."
Weiner was also a successful collegiate gymnast, receiving Team MVP honors at Temple in 1968-69 and earning two individual gold medals at the 1968 Maccabiah Games. He was inducted into the Cal Athletics Hall of Fame in 2023.
