LOS CABOS, Mexico – The California men's golf team finished the first round of the Cabo Collegiate tied for 12th place after shooting a 15-over-par 299 Sunday at Twin Dolphin Club.

Cal is just six strokes outside of the top half of the 14-team field – which includes eight top 30 squads – with 36 holes to play. Arizona State (-8) paced the field on day one with three golfers among the top five individually.

Sihao Cong carded a 1-over-par 72 and is only five shots behind co-leaders Preston Summerhays (Arizona State) and Preston Stout (Oklahoma State) after the first 18 holes. The redshirt freshman, who started on hole 9, was 4-over-par through his first 10 holes, but climbed the leaderboard with birdies on 1, 5 and 6.

The Bears collectively struggled on the back nine holes at Twin Dolphin, managing four birdies while shooting 13-over as a unit. Graduate senior Wenliang Xie, playing in his first tournament of the spring season, matched Cong with a 2-under front nine on the way to a 5-over-par 76 for the day.
