Plumb Takes Long Jump Bronze At ACC Indoor Championships
7 Bears Post Program Top-10 Marks; Cal Men Currently In Third
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – In the second day of competition at the ACC Indoor Track & Field Championships, the California track & field team carried its momentum over from Saturday's successes to keep turning heads at the Norton Sports & Learning Center with four scoring performances, six qualifying performances and seven program top-10 marks. Cal's men moved up from third to fifth in the standings with 27 points, while its women remained at 15 points and ended the day in eighth place.
The men's long jumpers put together one of their best combined performances of the season and scored 12 of the day's points. They were led by standout junior
Jason Plumb, who posted a best leap of 7.68m (25-2.5) on his second attempt to take home bronze for the second-straight conference meet, and freshman
Trevor Rogers, who improved his personal best by over 10 inches to finish fourth at 7.56m (24-9.75) and move up to No. 8 all-time at Cal.
Chukwunonso Udeh also recorded his top outing of the year to score for the Bears, reaching the final despite recording just one legal mark in his first three attempts and improving to an eighth-place season-best of 7.31m (23-11.75) on his final jump.
Seth Johnson also scored for the Bears' men, finishing fifth in the heptathlon with a total of 5505 points. The best event of his day was the first, when he ran a huge personal best of 7.96 in the 60m hurdles – good for 10th-fastest by any man at Cal and second overall in the competition. Meanwhile, teammate
Ashanti Elie posted a top-10 mark of her own in the high jump, claiming sole possession of No. 5 on the program top-10 list with a best leap of 1.74m (5-8.5).
Several Cal athletes recorded historic or qualifying times on the track; for
Asjah Atkinson, her 60m hurdles time in the prelims was both, as she moved up to No. 2 in program history with the third-best time of the day (8.27) and booked her spot in Monday's final. She was joined in the latter category by teammate
Mari Testa, who placed second in her heat at 8.32 – just .01 seconds off her career best.
Aysha Shaheed, who was already set to appear in the 200m final, also earned a spot in the 60m final with the second-fastest time in Cal history (7.28). On the men's side,
Johnny Goode clinched a second finals berth of his own with a time of 46.01, while
David Foster posted the fastest 60m time in the qualifying round (6.58), posting the largest margin of victory (.12) in any heat. Fellow school record-holder
Garrett MacQuiddy booked his own finals spot with his mile time of 4:05.86, which included a final 200m split of 26.83 that was the fastest in any heat.
Both of Cal's 800m runners –
Jayden Hill and
Iyan Godwin – posted personal records to move up the program's all-time lists, with Hill rising to No. 6 at 2:07.58 (a nearly three-second improvement) and Godwin to No. 8 at 1:51.26. Rounding out the day's career-best performances was
Zanae Woods in the 60m, who shaved .2 seconds off her PR to finish in 7.62.
