STANFORD – The California men's golf team ended the opening day of The Goodwin in the middle of the pack, shooting an 8-over-par 288 over the first 18 holes of play at Stanford Golf Course. The Golden Bears are tied for 16th in the 30-team field with 36 holes remaining.

Cal finished third among the 15 teams playing in the morning wave, finishing behind only Clemson (E) and San Francisco (+3), who ended the first day in eighth and 12th place, respectively. BYU (-5), Colorado (-5) and Utah (-4) paced a group of nine teams that shot even par or lower on Thursday.

Cal started strong with five birdies through the first two holes and three Bears – Wenliang Xie, Ziqin (Eric) Zhou and Charlie Berridge – were par or better at the turn. Xie, who finished tied for 28th with an even par 70, had an eagle on the par-5 seventh hole. The graduate senior battled through three bogeys on the back nine with birdies on 16 and 18.

The Bears managed only five total birdies, including Xie's pair, on holes 10-18.
