Heo Paces Bears In First Round At Pasatiempo
Cal In Sixth After 18 Holes At Western Intercollegiate
SANTA CRUZ – Daniel Heo nearly sunk an ace on the 18th hole and shot 3-under-par 67 to highlight the California men's golf team's opening round of the Western Intercollegiate at Pasatiempo Golf Club on Monday. Cal ended the day in sixth place and just five strokes outside of the top five after a 1-over-par 351.
Heo finished the first round in a tie for seventh place individually after carding his lowest 18-hole score since early October and trails co-leaders Filip Jakubcik (Arizona) and Taiga Kobayashi (Nihon University) by only two strokes with 36 holes left to play. Heo was even par through 12 holes before recording an eagle on No. 13 and birdies on 16 and 18. The Cal junior's tee shot on 18 nicked the pin for a near-eagle, and he put away his sixth under-par hole of the day shortly after.
Redshirt freshman
Sihao Cong and graduate
Wenliang Xie joined Heo inside the top 20 individually with even par 70s. Xie also notched an eagle for the Bears on hole 9; all six Bears carded a birdie or better on No. 9.
San Diego State (-12), Arizona (-5), Stanford (-5), Nihon University (-5) and UNLV (-4) make up the top five teams after 18 holes.
