Smith-Gordon Becomes Cal’s First MPSF Champ In 7 Years
Roald Gadderud Takes 2nd In All-Around, 3rd On Parallel Bars; Li Finishes 3rd On Pommel Horse
USAF ACADEMY, Colo. – The California men's gymnastics team posted its best overall score of the year Saturday at Air Force's Cadet Field House, bettering its previous season high by 2.150 points to 315.450, and fielded its first conference champion since 2018 as the Golden Bears finished third at the MPSF Championships behind Oklahoma (329.250) and Stanford (328.950) but ahead of Air Force (313.350).
In addition to winning his first MPSF title, redshirt junior
Jasper Smith-Gordon also became Cal's first conference champion on vault since Bob Sundstrom in 1987, when the Bears still competed in the Pac-10. His score of 14.250 was a season best and had the highest difficulty ranking (9.450) of any routine in the entire meet.
Junior
Theodor Roald Gadderud competed in the all-around for the first time this season and posted a score of 77.950, taking second place in the competition, as well as a third-place effort with a stuck dismount on parallel bars (13.900) that marked his highest score of the year and a team-leading 13.650 on rings. Graduate student
Aidan Li, who was named a College Gymnastics Association (CGA) Regular Season All-American earlier this week, scored a 14.400 on pommel horse to take third place for the second conference podium finish of his career.
Sophomore
Harry Kim posted a significant season best on pommel horse, improving by .250 to 13.300. Freshman
Matteo Bardana (13.600) and sophomore
Carter Kim (12.800) led the Bears on floor and high bar, respectively.
"The team fought hard today and we had some exceptional routines," interim head coach
Bryan Del Castillo said. "I'm proud of the work they did. We are still capable of much more - we've done even better in practice so I know we can produce big scores. We're talented, motivated and have built good momentum. I look forward to competing with this group at the NCAA Championships."
