REDWOOD SHORES – The No. 2 California men's rowing team had a dominating showing defeating crews from a pair Top-25 teams in No. 17 Wisconsin and No. 22 Oregon State at the Cal/Stanford Invitational at the Redwood Shores on Saturday. The event featured several dual races over a morning and afternoon session. The Golden Bears' V8+ had the fastest time of the day in its second race of the day finishing the course in 5:30.7.

AM Session Recap

In the V8+ race against Wisconsin, Cal got off to a quick start and developed an open-water lead by 500 meters that grew to a one-boat lead by the time the crews hit the 1,000-meter mark. The Bears gradually increased their lead to at least two boats of open water over the second half of the race to win in a time of 5:33.4.

The second race for the Golden Bears pitted Cal's freshmen 8+ against Oregon State's V8+. Cal jumped ahead by a half boat by the first 500 meters and kept pressing to increase its lead to several seats of open water by the 750-meter mark. By the time the Bears crossed under the bridge at the halfway mark they went ahead by three boats of open water to cruise to the win in a time of 5:42.8.

In the 2V8+ dual against Wisconsin, Cal went up by four seats in the first 10 strokes. The Bears' lead quickly grew to several seats of open water by the 500-meter mark. After Cal passed under the bridge its lead widened to four boats of open water and the Bears coasted to the win in a time of 5:38.1.

Cal's 4V8+ went up against Oregon State's 2V8+. It was a close race off the start with Cal taking just a two-seat lead over the first 250 meters. The Bears pressed over the next 500 meters and eventually built an open-water lead that increased to a full boat length by the halfway mark. The Bears didn't allow the Beavers to make up any ground over the second half of the race and won in a time of 5:48.5.

In the race between Cal's 5V8+ and Santa Clara's 3V8+, the Bears picked up a four-seat lead after the first 10 strokes and grew it to a boat of open water by the 500-meter mark. Cal kept pressing and eventually went ahead by almost four boats of open water by the halfway mark and easily won the race in a time of 5:52.3.

In the 3V8+ dual against Wisconsin, the Bears took a half-boat lead after the first 10 strokes and built a lead of several seats of open water by the 500-meter mark. After the halfway point under the bridge, Cal went ahead by over two boats of open water but the Beavers made a strong push over the second half of the race and closed the gap to within a boat of open water. It wasn't enough as the Bears held on for the win in a time of 5:54.4.

PM Session Recap

In the V8+ race between Cal and Santa Clara, the Bears jumped out to a boat of open water lead by the 500-meter mark. Cal's lead grew to three boats of open water by the time they hit the bridge at the halfway mark and they were able to gradually increase their lead over the second half of the race to come away with the win in a time of 5:30.7.

In the 2V8+ dual, Santa Clara had an injury and did not have a spare, so it was unable to race. Cal finished the course in 5:42.7.

In the race between the 3V8+ from Cal and Wisconsin, the Bears went ahead by six seats by the 250-meter mark and extended it to open water through 500 meters. By the time Cal hit the halfway marks they were ahead by several boat lengths of open water and cruised to the win in 5:41.1.

The last race of the day featured an intrasquad matchup between Cal's V8+ and freshmen 8+. The 4V8+ had an uneven start which allowed the freshmen to gain an advantage off the start and go ahead bow to stern by the 500-meter mark. The 4V8+ maintained contact through the 1,000-meter mark but was unable to make up any ground over the second half of the race and finished just five seconds back. The freshmen won in a time of 5:39.9.

The invitational continues tomorrow morning and will consist of races between Cal and crews from No. 20 UC San Diego and Santa Clara.
