Mya Wang Wins CalHOPE Courage Award

Award Acknowledges Athletes Who Have Overcome Personal Hardships And Adversity

Former California lacrosse student-athlete Mya Wang has been named the winner of the 2024-25 CalHOPE Courage Award. Wang previously won the award in September of 2024.

The award, presented monthly since February 2022 by the College Sports Communicators in association with the Associated Press, honors student-athletes at California colleges and universities who have overcome the stress, anxiety and mental trauma associated with personal hardships and adversity. Wang captured the monthly accolade last September and was one of 14 student-athletes who were recognized throughout the year.

Wang was recognized for her perseverance and resilience from her diagnosis of thyroid cancer as an incoming freshman at Cal. She withdrew from the team as a freshman in the fall of 2021 and focused on recovering from her surgery. After recovery, she made her lacrosse return when she competed for Team Hong Kong at the 2022 World Championships.

Wang's return to the Bears was delayed because of a second surgery, but she recovered and returned to the Cal lacrosse team in 2023.

Wang played 33 games during her Golden Bear career while making 18 starts. She contributed 48 goals and 16 assists for 64 points.

Wang will be honored during an on-field ceremony at Oracle Park on Wednesday prior to the San Francisco Giants' game against the Kansas City Royals. A donation of $2,000 will be made to Cal to support mental health services for students. Since the inception of the program, more than $65,000 has been donated to support on-campus mental health services for students.
