Cal Men's Rowing Collects Top MPSF Honors
Breuer Named Athlete Of The Year; Frandsen Tabbed Top Coach
After taking home the MPSF's first-ever men's rowing conference championship, No. 2 California was rewarded with several postseason honors, the conference office announced Thursday. Senior Frederick Breuer was named MPSF Athlete of the Year and Cal head coach
Scott Frandsen was named MPSF Coach of the Year.
Â
Breuer was also named to the MPSF All-Conference team along with senior
Angus Dawson, graduate coxswain
Iliad Izadi and senior
Harry Manton.
Â
Breuer, a native of Bonn, Germany, rowed in the stroke seat for Cal's V8+ win at last weekend's MPSF Championships and has been a part of the Bears' V8+ his entire career in Berkeley, including the team's back-to-back IRA national titles in 2022 and 2023. He took the last season off to train and compete for a spot on Germany's Olympic team, which he secured on the men's eight. Breuer has also been as impressive in the classroom as he earned Cal Athletics' Jake Gimbel award – given to the graduating male student-athlete with the highest GPA last week.
Â
Dawson, from Dingabledinga, Australia, has also been on Cal's V8+ all four years he has been on the team and was a key piece of the Bears' two IRA national titles in 2022 and 2023. Dawson has also spent significant time on Australia's national team and competed in the men's eight this past summer at the Paris Olympics and was part of the Aussie eight that won gold at the 2023 World Rowing Cup III in Lucerne, Switzerland.
Â
Izadi, out of Bethesda, Maryland, has been the coxswain on the V8+ boat for a majority of the season including the crew that took first place at the MPSF Championships last weekend. He coxed the 2V8+ that took first place and won the Kennedy Challenge Cup at the 2023 IRA National Championships – helping the Bears sweep all four events that year.
Â
Manton, a native of Melbourne, Australia, has been a member of the V8+ for the last two seasons. In 2024, he helped the Bears' V8+ to a third-place finish at the IRA National Championships and in 2023 he rowed in the V4+ that took first place and won the Eric Will Trophy at the IRA. Manton was named to the 2024 IRCA All-American Second Team and is a two-time IRCA Scholar-Athlete.
Â
Frandsen is in his seventh year as head coach of the men's rowing program and guided the Golden Bears to wins over nationally-ranked Brown, Stanford, Washington and Yale this season. In addition to leading the Bears to consecutive national titles in 2022 and 2023, he is also a member of the Cal Athletics Hall of Fame as he rowed on the Cal team that won three-straight IRA national championships (2000-02) and is a three-time Olympian having helped Canada win a silver in the men's pair at the 2008 Beijing Games.
