REDWOOD SHORES – The No. 2 California men's rowing team defeated No. 6 Stanford to win its 11th straight Big Row on Saturday morning at the Redwood Shores. The Golden Bears first and second varsity eights secured wins to close out the season and will now rest up before heading to their first-ever MPSF Championships at Lake Natoma May 17-18.

The Bears' V8+ got off to an aggressive start to get out in front of Stanford quickly and built a boat-length lead after 400 meters. Cal continued to slowly expand its lead and was ahead by six seconds by the halfway point. Over the second half of the race, the Bears continued to press and cruised to the win about 10 seconds ahead of the Cardinal.

The race between the 2V8+ crews the Bears held a slight lead after 400 meters but were able to pull away over the middle thousand meters to build an open-water lead and maintained its advantage over the closing 500 meters to easily win in a time of 5:58.2, almost 10 seconds faster than the Cardinal.

"Both crews raced really well and had that emotional bounce back that we were looking for after some tough racing at Washington last weekend," head coach Scott Frandsen said. "I'm pleased with the emotion and intensity that we attacked the races with and it was definitely something to build off over the next two weeks. We talked about how to best manage upcoming exams and get ahead of academic demands and make sure we're staying healthy and be able to present our best crews  over the next couple of weeks and are fully focused on the races at the MPSF Championships."
