Bears Represent On International Stage In 2025
Cal Rugby Alumni, Current Players Join National Team Rosters
California rugby will be well represented in international competition this summer as both current and former Golden Bears have been named to player pools for the United States, Hong Kong, Chile and Canada national teams ahead of the summer test matches. The Bears will look to make an impact as test match results this summer will play a key role in nations qualifying for the upcoming Rugby World Cup, which will be held in Australia in 2027.
Â
U.S. National Team veterans and Cal alums, Jack Iscaro (class of 2019) and Sam Golla ('22), have been selected to the traveling squad for the July matches while alums Christian Dyer ('21) and Max Schumacher ('23) and current rising senior
Rand Santos were designated as non-traveling reserves.
Â
Team USA has three matches on the docket in July, all on home soil. The Eagles will take on Belgium on July 5 and Spain on July 12, with both matches set to be contested at American Legion Memorial Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Eagles will then head to the nation's capital to face England on July 19 at Audi Field. All matches will be streamed live on Paramount+.
Â
Iscaro enters the summer series with 13 caps under his belt, while Golla has been capped seven times. Dyer has made 14 appearances in XVs action and has twice been capped as a sevens player, while Santos made his Eagles debut against Fiji at the 2024 Pacific Nations Cup last September.
Â
A contingent of current Bears have also been selected to the U23 U.S. National Team on its summer tour in South Africa. Santos will join the traveling squad along with fellow rising seniors
Solomon Williams and
Byron Finley, in addition to rising sophomore
Oliver Kirk. The age-grade squad will contest matches against the Boland Cavaliers at Boland Park Rugby Stadium in Cape Town on July 8 and the University of Stellenbosch Maties at Danie Craven Stadium in Stellenbosch on July 12.
Â
Rising senior
Max Threlkeld has been named to the Hong Kong player pool for the ongoing 2025 Asia Rugby Emirates Championships. Threlkeld, a dual citizen in Hong Kong and the United States, made his international debut last November as a starter against Brazil in the Autumn International Series.
Â
Team Hong Kong recently defeated Sri Lanka 78-7 on June 22. Its next fixture will be against South Korea on July 5 at the Incheon Namdong Asiad Rugby Stadium. A win over South Korea would secure a spot for Hong Kong in the Rugby World Cup.
Cal alum
Emilio Shea ('24) was selected to the player pool for Chile. Shea will look to make his debut as an international in Chile's home test match against Romania on July 5 before the team turns its focus to the Rugby World Cup qualifiers against Brazil on the road on July 18 and at home on July 26.
Â
Rising senior
Cormac Saint, who holds both United States and Canadian passports, was named to the extended player pool for Canada. Canada will host two matches at Clarke Stadium in Edmonton, first welcoming Belgium on July 12 before taking on Spain on July 18.
