Large Cal Contingent Set For U23 World Rowing Championships

9 Bears Set To Compete In Poland

BERKELEY – The California men's rowing team is sending nine Golden Bears to compete in the U23 World Rowing Championships which take place July 23-27 in Poznan, Poland. Five of the Bears will be competing in their second consecutive championships in Jeremey Beale, Johannes Benien, Nat Gauden, Wilson Morton and Maximilian Pfautsch. Rounding out the contingent of Cal rowers are Noah Anger, Xavier Gagnon, Pablo Moreno and Matthew Waddell.
 
Anger, Benien and Pfautsch will race for Germany in the men's eight. Anger also raced in the 2023 U23 championships, where he took bronze in the men's eight and in 2022 in the men's eight. Benien competed in the men's pair at the 2024 championships and won the silver medal. He also competed at the U19 World Championships in 2023, where he won silver in the men's pair and 2022 where he took the gold in the men's eight. This mark's Pfautsch's third straight U23 World Championships. He competed in the men's eight in 2024 and the quadruple sculls in the 2023, when he won gold.
 
Beale will represent Australia in the men's eight, an event he competed in at the 2024 U23 World Championships where the Aussies won the bronze medal.
 
Gagnon is part of the men's eight and Morton will be in the men's four for the United States. Morton has also competed in two previous U23 championships, taking silver in the men's eight in both 2024 and 2023.
 
Gauden is set to compete in the men's double sculls for Great Britain. He previously raced in the quadruple sculls at the 2023 U19 championships, where he took the silver medal.
 
Moreno will be in the men's four representing Spain. His previous international experience includes the 2022 U23 championships, where he raced in the quadruple sculls, and the 2021 World Rowing Junior Championships, where he won gold in the men's four.
 
Waddell is part of the men's eight for New Zealand, marking his second overall appearance at the U23 championships. He previously raced in the men's coxed four at the 2023 championships.
