New Assistant Brings 6 Years Of NCAA Coaching Experience

Donna Fong Director of Field Hockey Shellie Onstead announced Thursday the addition of assistant coach Kieran Minton to the coaching staff. Minton will play an integral role in recruiting, team preparation and player development.

Minton joins the Golden Bears after spending the past three seasons as an assistant coach at Kent State, helping the Golden Flashes to their second consecutive MAC regular season championship in 2022. During his tenure, Kent State accumulated nine all-conference award winners, four NFHCA All-Region honors, two MAC Newcomer of the Year accolades and one MAC Defensive Player of the Year honoree.

"We are excited to welcome Kieran to the Cal family," Onstead said. "He stood out amongst a strong class of candidates due to his overall field hockey experience, both domestically and abroad. His time coaching at the Division One level gives him a great perspective. He will hit the ground running as we head into a competitive season and beyond."

Minton began his coaching career at Aberystwyth University in 2017, primarily working with goalkeepers for the first and second team. He also served as a volunteer assistant coach at Ohio State during the 2021 season, a graduate assistant at Ohio from 2019-20, and was part of the first team coaching staff at Chester University before arriving in the United States in 2019 from the United Kingdom. Minton obtained a master's degree in coaching education from Ohio.

"Joining Cal is a tremendous opportunity, both professionally and personally," Minton said. "I'm eager to learn from a world-class staff, support an exceptional group of student-athletes, and be a part of a community that aligns with my values and passion for the game. Go Bears."

Originally from Rhyl, Wales, Minton began his playing career at the age of 11 and represented his Junior National Team at the U14, U16 and U18 levels. He played on the first team at Aberystwyth University, winning back-to-back league championships (2013-14). He graduated with honors, earning a bachelor's degree in biology.

Minton went on to play at Chester University, where he was a member of league championship teams (2016, 2017) before finishing his career in 2018.
