Opportunities Await Running Backs Room

The Room:

RB Notes:

  • The Golden Bear running back room is composed of three returners in Dean-Taylor Chapman, Jayden Parker and Jamaal Wiley and three transfers in Brandon High Jr. (UTSA), LJ Johnson Jr. (SMU) and Kendrick Raphael (NC State). True freshman Anthony League is the lone prep newcomer in the group. 
  • Jamaal Wiley is the lone Bear to return in 2025 that scored a rushing touchdown from a season ago. He appeared in four games last season. 
  • Dean-Taylor Chapman and Jayden Parker did not see any action last season.
  • Transfer Brandon High Jr. carried the ball 93 times for the Roadrunners and compiled 495 rushing yards and eight touchdowns last season. He also caught six passes for 58 yards.
  • LJ Johnson Jr. appeared in 13 games for the Mustangs while starting in three last seasons. He had 303 rushing yards and tallied five rushing touchdowns. Through the air, he had 11 receptions for 80 yards. 
  • League, the lone true freshman in the group, rushed for 1,546 yards and 22 TDs as a senior in 2024 at Millikan High School in Long Beach. He averaged 154.6 ypg and 10.6 ypc with a long of 84 yards while catching 14 passes for 379 yards and 4 TDs in 2024, when Millikan HS posted an 8-3 overall record and 6-0 league mark. He was later named the 2024 Moore League Player of the Year.
  • Raphael, who comes to Cal from NC State, was third on the Wolfpack last year in rushing with 425 yards on 78 carries (6.5 yards per attempt) and three touchdowns.

Running Backs Coach: Julian Griffin, 1st Season

  • Griffin comes to Berkeley after five successful seasons at UTSA, where he helped the Roadrunners shatter several school records – including single-season marks for rushing yards, rushing yards per game, rushing average and rushing touchdowns. 
  • UTSA qualified for a bowl game in each of Griffin's five seasons.
  • Griffin was named to Dave Campbell's Texas Football 40 Under 40 list in June 2021.
  • Prior to his time in San Antonio, Griffin served as an offensive quality control coach at Arkansas and SMU.
  • With the Mustangs, he worked with current Denver Broncos wide receiver Courtland Sutton and helped SMU rank in the top 20 nationally in both scoring offense and passing offense in 2017.
  • In 2016, Griffin was the wide receivers/special teams coordinator at Central Methodist (Mo.) before returning to the FBS level.
  • In 2015, Griffin coached at Louisiana-Monroe, his alma mater, as an offensive graduate assistant.
  • Griffin's first coaching opportunity was a two-year stint as the running backs coach at Texas A&M-Kingsville.
  • Griffin played wide receiver for the University of Louisiana-Monroe from 2008-12. He earned his bachelor's degree in kinesiology and exercise fitness from ULM in 2012 and his master's degree in education from Texas A&M-Kingsville in 2015.
