Cal Downs Delaware

Klompmaker Scores Career-High 3 Goals

The California field hockey team used a dominant second period in which Liz Klompmaker scored a career-high three goals to come away with a 5-4 victory against Delaware at Fred P. Rullo Stadium on Sunday morning. The Golden Bears (1-1) outshot the Blue Hens (0-2) 17-13 with nine shots on goal.

After Delaware scored the first goal of the game in the first period, Holly Pears scored off a Josefina Moyano assist followed by three-straight goals from Klompmaker in the second period. The three goals marked the most in a single game by a Bear since Daniella Rhodes scored four against Stonehill on Sep. 9, 2023.

Olivia Sharratt netted a fifth unanswered goal in the third period at the 12:10 mark to put Cal up 5-1. The Bears were forced to play the final 10 minutes of the game with just 10 on the field as Klompmaker received a yellow card and had to leave the game. The Blue Hens were able to take advantage and close the gap with three goals in the fourth period but were unable to complete the comeback.

"I knew at halftime that Delaware would be good at the comeback," Donna Fong Director of Field Hockey Shellie Onstead said. "We were mindful not to be complacent, yet they did their part to get us under pressure. I am very proud of the staff and our players for digging in after a tough loss on Friday and putting in the time off the field and in training on Saturday. Additionally, our Bears were a player down for a total of 22 minutes out of 60. This was a complete team effort."

Cal hosts No. 6 Harvard in its home opener Sep. 5 at 6 p.m. PT.
