CARY, N.C. – California women's tennis senior Berta Passola Folch posted an impressive win in her qualifying singles opener at the ITA All-American Championships on Monday to advance to Tuesday's second round at Cary Tennis Park.
 
Ranked 113th, Passola Folch defeated Texas A&M's 64th-ranked and seventh-seeded Daria Smetannikov 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.
 
Passola Folch next faces Tennessee's Elim Yan in the round of 32 at a time to be announced on Tuesday, when the Spaniard would have to win two matches to reach the main draw. The main draw – which already includes Cal junior Mao Mushika – starts Wednesday.
 
Also on Wednesday, Mushika pairs with freshman Laura Cilekova to start the doubles main draw.
