CARY, N.C. – California women's tennis stars Mao Mushika and Berta Passola Folch each moved one step closer to qualifying for the NCAA Singles Championship when they won in the main draw singles round of 32 on Thursday at the ITA All-American Championships.
 
If the two Golden Bears win their round of 16 matches Friday to advance to the quarterfinal round, they will punch their tickets to NCAA singles, slated for November in Orlando, Florida.
 
In main draw singles on Thursday in Cary, the ninth-seeded and 17th-ranked Mushika defeated NC State's 88th-ranked Laviia Tanasie 7-6(5), 6-2, while the 113th-ranked Passola Folch beat Wichita State's 73rd-ranked Xin Tong Wang 6-2, 6-4.
 
Mushika also partnered with Laura Cilekova in consolation doubles, with the Cal tandem topping Michigan's 50th-ranked Piper Charney and Emily Sartz-Lunde in the first round. The pairs were tied 7-5, 5-7, 3-3 when the Wolverines retired, handing the win to the Bears.
 
On Friday, the round of 16 matches for both Mushika and Passola Folch are scheduled to start at 9 a.m. PT. Mushika will face Stanford's fourth-seeded and sixth-ranked Valerie Glozman, while Passola Folch will take on Ohio State's third-seeded and fifth-ranked Luciana Perry. Cilekova and Mushika next play Auburn's second seeded and third-ranked Ashton Bowers and DJ Bennett on Friday at a time to be announced.
 
Additionally Friday, another group of Bears will start play in the annual Cal Fall Invitational in Berkeley.
