Cal Downs UCLA In Title Game
CARSON – The California rugby team commenced its fall sevens season Saturday, with its top side winning the championship with a perfect run through the West Coast 7s Los Angeles at Dignity Health Sports Park.
The Golden Bears rolled into the championship game with victories over San Diego State (29-7), Western Washington (27-0) and Long Beach State (34-10). That set up a showdown with UCLA, and Cal breezed past the Bruins, 37-0.
Solomon Williams registered four tries and a conversion for the tournament while Oliver Newall, Bryan Bogne, Nate Comiskey and Oliver Teague each had three tries.
The Bears brought a second side to Southern California and it ended the day with a 38-0 victory over USC after losses to UCLA and San Diego.
"Our top team was solid; a good start," Cal head coach Jack Clark said. "Our second group had a learning experience, which is valuable in a different way."
Cal resumes its sevens season on Oct. 11 with the West Coast 7s Stanford at Steuber Rugby Stadium.
