BERKELEY – The California women's tennis team swept all four of its singles matches and won three times in doubles Sunday as the Cal Winter Invitational came to a close.
 
The Golden Bears got straight-set wins from freshmen Mille Johanna Moerk and Laura Cilekova before sophomore Anya Murthy defeated Cal Poly's Candela Aparisi 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 and junior Tiziana-Marie Schomburg bested Kennedy Buntrock 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the last two matches of the day at the Hellman Tennis Complex. Earlier at Hellman, the 80th-ranked Cilekova and junior Mao Mushika posted a 7-6(2) result over the Mustangs' Aparisi and Natalie Lynch as the Bears won three of four doubles matches.
 
"We were excited to see the Bears back in action after the winter break," Cal assistant coach Stephanie Kusano Wallace said. "It was important for the team to play competitive matches and try out new doubles combinations to ensure a confident start to the season. We're thankful to the Cal community and our fans who always come out to support the Bears, and we're looking to carry this momentum into the ITA Kickoff next weekend in Texas."
 
The annual Cal Winter Invitational serves as a tuneup for the start of the dual-match season, which begins in the ITA Kickoff Weekend hosted by Texas. The 15th-ranked Bears take on No. 25 Baylor on Saturday in Austin, Texas, with the winner of that match advancing to play either the 12th-ranked Longhorns or Arizona next Sunday for the right to advance to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship in February.
