Bears Prepare for Rematch With Bruins

Cal Travels to L.A. for Matchup with UCLA Saturday at Noon

LOS ANGELES – California rugby hits the road again this weekend for a rematch with UCLA on Saturday. The game is set to kickoff at noon, with a reserve-grade contest to immediately follow the match.

The Bears faced UCLA earlier this season in the Dennis Storer Classic, defeating the Bruins 45-0 in an abbreviated match. Prior to that, Cal and UCLA last met for 15-a-side action on Feb. 8, 2025, with the Bears coming away with a 36-7 victory. 2026 returners Cade Crist, Rand Santos, Cormac Saint, Jack Byszio, and Max Threlkeld all scored tries in the contest, while Saint added four conversions.

The Bruins come into the rematch with Cal holding a 3-1 record in their spring XVs season, with victories over LMU (20-5), USC (10-5), and UC Santa Barbara (92-0), with their lone loss coming to Cal in the Storer Classic.

Last Saturday, the Bears cruised to a 75-5 home victory over Olympic Club. Nine different players scored in the victory, led by sophomores Filip Edstrom and Masi Koi, who each scored a pair of tries. Edstrom also converted seven conversion kicks as Cal improved to 4-0 in the spring season.

The Bears will likely rotate their lineup somewhat, with a few new starters in the starting fifteen. Junior Talae Tuimaunei and freshman Arthur Braxton look to be in the frame in the forwards. While junior Brice Muller and senior Byron Finley could play in their secondary positions in the backrow. Junior Peter Symington could pair with freshman Oliver Sinclair in the centers. Cal is hopeful to have sophomore wing Masi Koi and senior fullback Oliver Newall back after missing the previous trip to Westwood for the Storer Classic.
