Bears Shine Again At Dempsey
2 More Program Top 10s Earned At Mile City
SEATTLE – Seven of California track & field's distance runners returned to Washington's Dempsey Indoor on Saturday for the famed Mile City meet, one day after recording five program top-10 times at the UW Invitational. There, they closed out the weekend with another set of fine performances, including another pair of Golden Bear top 10s.
It was junior
Justin Pretre who once again posted Cal's top time of the day, competing in the men's mile invite section. Pretre, who entered the weekend as the Bears' No. 4 performer in the indoor mile, lowered his PR by 1.23 seconds to 3:58.11 – second fastest in program history behind only alumnus
Garrett MacQuiddy (3:57.65, 2025). MacQuiddy, who was entered in the same heat as a member of his club team, finished just ahead of Pretre at 3:57.53.
In the seeded mile competition, senior
Rowan FitzGerald ran a patient race and lowered his mile PR by nearly eight seconds to 4:03.68 (just .22 seconds away from Cal's all-time top 10 list), which was good for a top-10 finish out of 344 total competitors. He was followed in the standings by classmate
Caden Carney (4:06.36) and redshirt freshmen
Gabriel Rodriguez and
Zac Gibson, who made their indoor mile debuts with respective times of 4:12.95 and 4:26.40.
Junior
Addie Johnson, who became Cal's No. 4 indoor 3000m performer in history Friday, made her debut on the program's indoor mile list with a time of 4:46.52, good for No. 7 in Cal history and the program's No. 10 individual performance. It also marked the fastest indoor mile run by a Bear woman since 2023, when alumnae Claire Yerby ran that same distance in 4:42.52 at the 2023 Ken Shannon Last Chance meet. Johnson's senior teammate
Georgia McCorkle also turned in a heat-winning PR Saturday, finishing the race in 4:54.94.
