No. 4 Cal Rolls Past No. 17 Pacific
Drakotou Nets Seven Goals In Victory
BERKELEY – Freshman
Despoina Drakotou fell one goal short of tying the California women's water polo single-game record and the No. 4 Golden Bears rolled to a 25-9 victory over No. 17 Pacific on Saturday evening at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
Drakotou, who has won each of the first two MPSF Newcomer of the Week awards this season, recorded seven goals on seven shots to lead Cal. She became just the fourth player in program history to score at least seven goals in a game, tying Emma Wright and Dana Ochsner for second place on the Bears' all-time single-game scoring list. Former All-American Collette Glinkowski holds the program's single-game record with eight goals against UC Santa Cruz in 1997.
Sophomore
Holly Dunn added four goals and two assists and senior
Abbi Magee had three goals, two assists and two steals for the Bears, who have outscored their opponents 114-63 through six games. All six of Cal's contests so far this season have been against ranked teams.
The Bears didn't waste any time taking control of Saturday's game, scoring the first six goals and leading 7-1 at the end of the first quarter. Cal had a 15-2 advantage at halftime and cruised the rest of the way.
The Bears had 12 different goal-scorers, including goalie
Talia Fonseca, who converted a shot as the horn sounded to end the second quarter. Freshman
Gabby Reichley registered her first career goal in the first quarter.
Cal returns to action next Sunday, Feb. 8, at No. 14 UC Davis.
