A Message From California Football General Manager/Athletic Director Ron Rivera
Cal Family –
As we get set to embark on the second half of the season, I find myself feeling a sense of gratitude from the unwavering support of our Cal community.
We continue to learn, grow and improve as a football program – every student-athlete, coach, administrator and support staff member plays a crucial role in what we are trying to accomplish, and I am proud of their hard work, dedication and focus at the task at hand.
Saturday night's game against Wake Forest will be an opportunity for us to compete against a ranked opponent. Just as important, Saturday evening will once again be a chance for our football program to be the mechanism that brings our community together. It's so gratifying to be at Databricks Field at California Memorial Stadium and see our passionate fans – of so many different demographics and backgrounds – come together to support the team. Families, alumni, donors, community members, and everyone else in between congregate in Berkeley to not only cheer on our Golden Bears but share in the joy, thrill and excitement of what college football can do for a community.
We get to watch our players perform at the highest level when they are out on the field, but what you see wouldn't be possible if it weren't for the collaboration and contributions of so many. Our Cal Athletics village is extensive, and so many staff members are hard at work every day to put our student-athletes in position to succeed.
We understand our football program is the most visible sport on campus, and with that comes a responsibility that we don't take lightly. Our mission every day is to have a football program that makes each and every one of you proud – from the way we play, the way we learn in the classroom, the way we interact with our community and the way we carry ourselves as people.
But it's not just about football. There are so many great things going on across our athletic department. Our men's water polo team is ranked No. 4 in the country. Our field hockey program has one of the most improved teams in the nation and is ranked No. 15 nationally. Our volleyball team is 13-4. Our men's golf team just won its first tournament in three years and our rugby program has won two tournaments this fall. We, as a football program, celebrate all of our teams' success across the department.
We have three more chances to come together and support the team at Databricks Field at California Memorial Stadium, beginning with Saturday night's game. Join us in Berkeley by buying tickets at CalBears.com or calling 1-800-GO-BEARS. And if you can't, watch us on TV. And if you leave the house, leave your TV on. Attendance and viewership are two of the key metrics we are evaluated on in terms of our value and impact, and will be key as we position ourselves for the future.
As a football program and athletic department, we couldn't be more grateful for your generosity, belief and commitment to the university we know makes you so proud. We ask you to continue to invest in our mission by making a gift today to Cal Football – we understand what we do means so much to so many of you, and it motivates us every day in our quest for success.
If you are a business looking for a partner – either with our department or one of our student-athletes - the opportunities are endless. We have already seen the importance of our recent partnerships with Dialpad and Databricks. It can truly make a significant impact on what we are trying to achieve now and in the future. To learn more, e-mail Lindsey Jones at @l_jones@berkeley.edu.
On behalf of Cal Athletics and Cal football, I just want to reiterate my deep appreciation for the support from our entire Cal Family. We truly can't accomplish our goals without you, and for that we are extremely grateful.
Go Bears!
