SEATTLE – Senior Lenn Luemkemann has earned a spot in the NCAA Singles Championships, set for Nov. 17–22, in Athens, Georgia, after his run at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships.
Luemkemann opened the tournament with wins over opponents from Portland, Sacramento State and Santa Clara, then defeated a fellow Golden Bear, junior Paris Pouatcha, 5-7, 7-5, 6-4 in the quarterfinals. On Monday, Luemkemann dominated Stanford's Nicholas Godsick 6-1, 6-0 in the semifinals to clinch his NCAA berth. The win also makes him co-champion of the ITA Northwest Regionals, giving Cal a regional champion for the third straight year.
"Yeah, I'm feeling great after qualifying for NCAAs for the first time," Luemkemann said. "I had a great week. I just can't wait for Athens. I am very happy with how I competed and faced challenges this week."
In doubles, both Cal pairs, Alex Aney and Timofey Stepanov, and Pouatcha and Luemkemann, fell in the quarterfinals.
Pouatcha finished the tournament 2-1 in singles and 2-1 in doubles. Sophomore Andrea Meduri saw his unbeaten singles run come to an end but is 7-1 this season.
