Golden Bears Split Games At San Diego State And USC To Begin 2026 Campaign
FLORIDA STATE SEMINOLES (2-0, 0-0 ACC) at CALIFORNIA GOLDEN BEARS (1-1, 0-0 ACC) Â
FRIDAY, FEB. 13, 2026 • 3 PM PST
CALIFORNIA MEMORIAL STADIUM (BERKELEY, CA)
FIRSTS AND OPENERS
— Cal and Florida State will meet the first time ever on Friday.
— Friday's contest between Cal and Florida State will serve as the ACC opener for both teams and one of the schools will walk away with their first-ever ACC win as Cal was 0-9 in ACC games in its first season in the ACC in 2025 and Florida State is playing its first ACC slate in its first campaign as a lacrosse program in 2026.
— Cal is looking for its first win in a conference opener since a 2019 home victory over Oregon in the Golden Bears' Pac-12 opener that season.Â
— Cal had dropped 10 consecutive home openers before ending that drought with a 19-10 win over Akron in 2024 but fell 17-6 to USC in its 2025 home debut.Â
Â
CAL BEGINS 2026 SEASON BY SPLITTING GAMES AT SAN DIEGO STATE AND USC
— Cal opened its 2026 season with a 13-12 road victory over San Diego State last Friday in front of a school-record 1,317 fans at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego before falling at USC, 16-9, two days later the first time a lacrosse match was held at Rawlinson Stadium in Los Angeles.
—
Courtney Wong (6 goals, 5 assists, 11 points) and
Emily Moes (7 goals, 1 assist, 8 points) put up Cal's top offensive numbers over the two games. Moes led nine different Cal goal scorers by tallying each of the team's first three in the win at San Diego State, while Wong had two goals, as well as a career-high four assists for a career-high-tying six points. Both players had four goals in the loss at USC on first-half hat tricks and one second-half goal each, while adding one assist. Wong's four goals tied her career high. Â
—
Maddie Willkomm's first career goal with 6:01 remaining was the game-winner and the final score against San Diego State in a contest that neither team ever led by more than two goals. The back-and-forth contest featured nine ties and four lead changes.
— Cal held a 4-2 lead late in the first period at USC on Sunday but was outscored, 14-5, from that point on. The Bears fell behind by four goals for the first time on the Trojans' second goal of the third period and never got any closer.
—
Lulu Murphy had 14 saves in her collegiate debut at San Diego State with the final one coming on a shot from Keira Doyle-Odenbach at nearly point-blank range with 1:00 left on the clock.
— The win at San Diego State was Cal's school-record fourth in a row to open a campaign dating back to 2023 and kept fourth-year head coach
Jennifer Wong unbeaten in season openers with the Bears. Â
TOUGH 2026 SCHEDULE
— Cal has seven teams on its 2026 schedule that are ranked in the current IWLCA Division I Coaches Poll. Cal's first five games of the 2026 season are against teams currently unranked (at San Diego State, at USC, Florida State, at Oregon, UC Davis) before the Bears play seven of their final 12 regular-season contests against teams currently in the top 25. No. 14 Duke is the first ranked opponent the Bears are slated to face on Feb. 28 in Durham, North Carolina, followed by a road contest at No. 13 Syracuse (Mar. 3), a home game against No. 1 North Carolina (Mar. 12), a visit to No. 16 Notre Dame (Mar. 28), a home outing against No. 9 Clemson (Apr. 3), and a short road trip to Bay Area rival No. 4 Stanford (Apr. 16) to wrap up the regular season. All seven teams that are currently ranked in the 2026 poll played in the 16-team NCAA Championship in 2025, with North Carolina the national champion and Boston College reaching the semifinals.
WEATHER FORECASTÂ
— Friday's AccuWeather forecast at California Memorial Stadium in Berkeley at first draw calls for partly sunny skies, a 0% chance of precipitation, a temperature of 61 degrees, and winds out of the west/southwest direction at 8 miles per hour.Â
A LITTLE MORE
— Cal is playing for only the third time ever on Friday the 13th. Cal previously suffered a 15-8 loss at USC on Friday, Mar. 13, 2015, while the Bears were a 15-13 winner at home over Oregon on Friday, Apr. 13, 2018.
