Bears' Distance Runners All Post PRs In Seattle
Cal Combines For 8 More Program Top 10s Across Two Meets
SEATTLE/RENO, Nev. – The California track & field team closed out its indoor regular season Saturday with several outstanding results at the Husky Classic in Seattle and the Battle Born Classic in Reno, Nevada, putting the Golden Bears in good shape as they turn their attention to the upcoming ACC Indoor Championships.
Every single one of Cal's distance runners competing Saturday posted a personal best in Seattle. The first event of the day was the men's mile, where seniors
Caden Carney (4:00.51) and
Rowan FitzGerald rose to No. 7 and No. 10, respectively, in program history, while redshirt freshmen
Gabriel Rodriguez and
Zac Gibson posted times of 4:10.08 and 4:13.23. Next was the women's 800m, where senior
Carolina Dawson improved her own program No. 10 time to 2:08.58. The men's 800m featured junior
Lamarr Kirk Jr. and freshman sensation
Jackson Hein; Kirk broke the 1:50 barrier for the first time with a time of 1:49.74 to rise from No. 9 to No. 5 in program history, while Hein followed Dawson's example and bettered his own program No. 7 time to 1:50.33.
The standout result of the afternoon, however, came from junior
Addie Johnson. Competing in a 3000m invite section that finished with three of the top-25 times in collegiate history, Johnson rose to the challenge and improved her PR by nearly eight seconds to 9:06.64 – third-fastest in Cal history and the best time by a Bear since alumnae Deborah Maier's 9:02.35 at the 2012 MPSF Championships. She is just one of three Cal women to break 9:07 in the event, following Maier and school record-holder Chelsea Reilly (2012).
Over in Reno, sophomore
Nairobi Smith continued her breakout sophomore season with a third-place time of 23.52 in the 200m, taking sole control of Cal's No. 2 all-time spot and coming within 0.03 seconds of the school record with a .29-second PR.
Cal's triple jumpers also performed well, led by junior
Jeremiah Bolaños' winning mark of 15.56m (51-0.75), the best indoor mark by a Bar in seven years, to become the No. 7 performer in school history with a 7.5-inch PR. Sophomore
Kosi Nwafor finished third with a best jump of 14.39m (47-2.5), while redshirt sophomore
Frankie Cruz Jr. made his indoor collegiate debut in the event with a leap of 14.27m (46-10). On the women's side, senior
Leah Anderson and freshman
Avery Hart placed second and third, respectively, with season-best marks of 12.38m (40-7.5) and 12.34m (40-6).
Junior
Lucija Leko won the women's shot put title with a toss of 15.61m (51-2.75), while redshirt junior
Nik Iwankiw placed third in the men's contest with a PR of 17.54m (57-6.5).
