SANTA CLARA – The California softball team closed out the Silicon Valley Classic with a strong offensive showing Sunday morning, defeating Illinois State 8-4 at SCU Softball Stadium to improve to 4-6 on the season.
Cal broke through in the third inning after two scoreless frames, capitalizing on defensive miscues to seize early momentum. Kayli Counts singled and advanced on a throwing error before Anaya Togia followed with a base hit. Carly Raven delivered the first run with an RBI single to left, and Gator Robinson added another RBI knock to give the Bears a 2-0 lead.

The Bears added to their cushion in the fifth. Madison Rey drew a walk to set the table, and Robinson launched a two-run homer to left field extending the advantage to 4-0.

Illinois State answered in the bottom half of the inning, stringing together four runs on four hits to even the score at 4-4.

Cal responded immediately in the sixth. Xiomei Geluz singled to spark the rally, and Togia drove in the go-ahead run with an RBI single. Raven followed with a sacrifice fly, helping the Bears regain control at 6-4.

The Bears tacked on two more insurance runs in the seventh. Geluz lifted a sacrifice fly to center to score Rey, and Kayla Lee added an RBI bunt single to push the lead to 8-4.

Mya McGowan (3-2) earned the win, tossing 5.2 innings while allowing four runs on nine hits and striking out four. Kiki Mashhoud secured her first save of the season, closing out the final 1.1 innings and limiting the Redbirds to one hit.

Cal totaled 12 hits in the victory, with Robinson leading the way with three RBIs and Togia adding two hits and an RBI.
