Paulsson Tabbed ACC Newcomer Of The Week

Freshman Awarded Second Weekly Conference Honor

Freshman standout Tonya Paulsson was named the Atlantic Coast Conference's Newcomer of the Week, announced Tuesday by the conference. This is the second weekly conference honor of Paulsson's career after earning the same recognition following week one on Jan. 6.

Paulsson claimed her second podium finish in as many meets when she took silver in the all-around with a career-high 39.400 at Stanford this past Friday. This was only her second meet competing in the all-around after claiming gold the week prior in California's home opener versus NC State on Jan. 24.

Against the Cardinal, Paulsson posted a career-high 9.900 on floor exercise to win the event title outright and help the Golden Bears to their highest team floor score of the season (49.175).

She also clinched a pair of second-place finishes on vault and uneven bars at the Big Meet. Her vault was awarded a 9.875, which was a personal best and helped Cal win the rotation over Stanford with its best vault score of 2026 (49.275). Paulsson's uneven bars routine – which she punctuated with a stuck dismount – received a 9.925. It was her third time scoring a 9.925 or higher on uneven bars this season.

Following week four, Paulsson is ranked in the top 100 on three events in the weekly Road to Nationals rankings. She ties for 17th in the all-around, ties for 31st on uneven bars and shares 88th place on floor exercise nationally.

Paulsson, a freshman from Malmo, Sweden, has been a member of the Swedish National Team since 2019 and won the Sweden all-around championship in back-to-back seasons in 2019 and 2020, in addition to balance beam and floor exercise titles and a silver medal on uneven bars in 2020. Paulsson is a two-time European all-around finalist (2021 & 2023) and helped lead Team Sweden to the European Championship final in 2023. In 2024, she had a gold-medal performance on balance beam and floor exercise and a silver-medal performance on uneven bars at the World Challenge Cup of Szombathely. She was named to the ACC's Preseason Newcomer Watchlist in December.
