Bears Fall To Huskies 9-3

Cal Drops 5th Straight

BERKELEY— The California baseball team dropped its fifth straight game Tuesday night falling to UConn 9-3 at Stu Gordon Stadium.

The Husky bats were hot all night posting 17 hits, eight of which went for extra bases. Both marks are the most allowed by the Golden Bears' pitching staff this season.

Cal (13-8) took the lead on the first pitch it saw in the bottom of the first with Hideki Prather sending out his team-leading sixth home run of the season.

UConn (9-11) answered right away with three runs in the next half inning, two of which came with two outs, and added a single run in both the fourth and fifth to take a 5-1 lead.

The Bears punched back scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth on a Gannon Snyder RBI double and a sac-fly by Prather, but a half inning later the Huskies got their lead back and more with a three-spot.

Trent Roach (1-1) earned the start but had his shortest outing since his collegiate debut tossing just two innings. He was charged with his first career loss allowing two earned runs in the second inning. Cal featured five arms out of the bullpen including Ryan Spalliero, who had his best outing of the season tossing two scoreless innings. The senior allowed just one hit and no walks while striking out a pair.

On the offensive end Prather, Jacob French, and Lawson Olmstead all collected a walk and Snyder went 2-for-4 in the nine-hole.

The Bears will now head east this weekend to face Boston College in their first ACC road series of the season. Game one is set for Friday in Brighton, Massachusetts with a first-pitch time of 12 p.m. PT on ACCNX.
