Cal's Despoina Drakotou Earns 5th MPSF Newcomer of the Week Award
Freshman Adds To Her Honor Roll After Helping The Bears Beat Hawai'i
California women's water polo freshman
Despoina Drakotou has added another award to her Cal-record MPSF Newcomer of the Week honor roll, picking up her fifth set of accolades from the conference this week.
Drakotou scored twice and had three steals and two assists in the Golden Bears' 10-8 win over No. 5 Hawai'i last weekend. Her steal and second goal of the game gave Cal a 7-4 lead in the first half, and she'd later serve up an assist on the Bears' 10th goal of the game, which had been tied during the first half.
Drakotou is Cal's top scorer with 34 goals, and she has scored in 13 of the Bear's 14 games this season with a team-best 11 multiple-goal outings. She is Cal's most decorated player in terms of MPSF Newcomer of the Week honors, now with five awards to her name. Kitty Lynn Joustra was the previous leader as a three-time honoree in 2018.
The Bears cap off a three-game
homestand next with an
MPSF matchup against Indiana at Spieker Aquatics Complex. The Bears take on the Hoosiers at 1 p.m. PT on Saturday and also celebrate its graduating Golden Bears in a Senior Day ceremony after the game.
