No. 16 Cal Tops Orange 4-1
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The 16th-ranked California women's tennis team continued its ACC road trip Sunday with freshman
Johanne Svendsen clinching a 4-1 victory over Syracuse at the Drumlins Country Club.
Cal improved its record to 8-3 (5-1 ACC) — including 3-1 away from Berkeley — while the Orange fell to 5-8 (1-5).
Sunday's victory marked Svendsen's second straight clinching win of the season — including her triumph in Friday's 4-0 win at Boston College — and her fourth overall clincher. Her singles record now stands at 7-0.
The Bears took a 1-0 lead when the 65th-ranked pair of Svendsen and
Mao Mushika bested Serafima Shastova and Monika Wojcik 6-2 on Court 1 to clinch the doubles point. Cal also got wins from Court 3 – where
Mille Johanna Moerk and
Naomi Xu beat Anastasia Sysoeva and Emma Scaldalai 6-0 – and Court 2 – where
Berta Passola Folch and
Sophie Hernandez knocked off Leena Bennetto and Constance Levivier 6-3.
Cal built a 3-0 lead in singles when 82nd-ranked Mushika beat Wojcik 6-2, 6-3 on Court 3 and Moerk bested Levivier 6-3, 6-2 on Court 5.
Syracuse tallied its lone win on Court 6, where 91st-ranked Xu fell to Scaldalai 6-1, 6-3 to make the score 3-1.
Svendsen – ranked 16th – then topped Sysoeva 7-5, 6-4 on Court 1 to complete Cal's 4-1 result.
"I am proud of the Bears' performance on this road trip, especially playing and winning in their first indoor matches of the season," Cal head coach
Stephanie Kusano Wallace said. "The fight and grit they've shown is impressive as we continue to evolve as a team. Looking forward to carrying this momentum into our next set of matches."
The Bears face two more ACC road matches when they play at Louisville on Friday and at Notre Dame next Sunday.
