No. 19 Cal Drops 4-1 Match At No. 70 Notre Dame

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The 19th-ranked California women's tennis team fell to No. 70 Notre Dame 4-1 in an ACC dual match on Sunday at Eck Tennis Pavilion, with Golden Bear All-American Mao Mushika posting a victory in singles.
 
Cal's record now stands at 9-4 (6-2 ACC). The Fighting Irish improved to 14-7 (4-6).
 
The Bears earned the first win of the day, with Naomi Xu and Mille Johanna Moerk defeating Akari Matsuno and Mari-Louise Van Zyl 6-1 at Court 3 doubles. But the 65th-ranked duo of Mushika and Johanne Svendsen dropped a 6-3 match to Notre Dame's 45th-ranked Bianca Molnar and Bojana Pozder on Court 1. The Irish clinched the doubles point on Court 2, with the Bears' Berta Passola Folch and Sophie Hernandez losing to Rylie Hanford and Gabriella Rawles 6-4.
 
After dropping the first singles match of the day to trail 2-0, Cal got a straight-set win from 82nd-ranked Mushika over Pozder 7-5, 6-1 on Court 3 to cut the deficit to 2-1.
 
But the Irish won the next two to complete its 4-1 result, finishing the day on Court 6, where 91st-ranked Xu fell to Jessica Kovalcik 7-5, 6-3.
 
Cal next hosts 13th-ranked Virginia on Friday at the Hellman Tennis Complex to start its final homestand of the regular season.
