Bears Prepare To Host Inaugural Desimone Invitational

Tournament Named After Legendary Coach Steve Desimone

The California men's golf team continues its 2026 spring season Monday, hosting the Desimone Invitational. The inaugural tournament honors Cal's former legendary men's golf coach, Steve Desimone.

Desimone coached the Golden Bears for 37 years, taking over a program that had lost varsity status in 1979 and getting it reinstated as an NCAA sport. By the time he retired following the 2015-16 season, Cal had become a sustained power and Desimone was a larger-than-life pillar of college golf, in Berkeley and beyond.

The tournament will take place next Monday and Tuesday at Lake Merced Golf Club in Daly City. The Bears are one of 15 teams competing in the par 72, 6,915-yard course. The teams will play 36 holes on Monday, before playing the final 18 on Tuesday.

Cal will look to build off a promising showing at the Cabo Collegiate as sophomore Ziqin Zhou finished in a tie for second place individually, shooting 8-under par. The Bears finished in 11th place as a team, shooting a 13-over 865.

The Bears will tee off at 8:45 a.m. PT on Monday.
