Bears Complete Sweep Of Redwood Shores Invitational
Cal Picks Up 4 Wins On Sunday Morning To Close Out 2-Day Event
REDWOOD CITY – The California men's rowing team swept its Sunday morning races at the Redwood Shores Invitational to remain unbeaten at the two-day event on the Golden Bears' home waters. Cal's first through third varsity eights defeated a trio of crews from Santa Clara, in addition to the Bears' 4V8+ taking the win over Oregon State's third varsity eight. Over the course of the weekend, the Bears tallied 11 head-to-head wins, each by a substantial margin on the 2,000-meter course.
Â
Cal's first varsity eight opened the morning with a solid win over Santa Clara's first varsity eight, finishing the course in 5:41.1 to the Broncos' 6:04.2, which was good for the top time of all of Sunday's races. The Bears' 2V8+ finished their race against SCU's 2V8+ in 5:44.1, before the Cal 3V8+ boat put up a 5:48.2 final time to best the Broncos' 3V8+.
The Bears' 4V8+ outdistanced Oregon State's 3V8+, finishing in 5:51.1 to the Beavers' 6:31.9, to close out the competition.
Cal made several changes to its lineups between the three sessions of the competition, allowing head coach
Scott Frandsen and his staff to test multiple lineup combinations this weekend before the Bears embark upon the heavy part of their season.
Â
"I'm really happy with how the weekend of racing went for the squad as a whole," Frandsen said. "I'm impressed with the depth of the team. I'm really grateful to have been able to race different lineups and get information about the top-end of the team, and gain some insight about where lineups might be standing. Now, it's back to work to build into the later spring-season races, with all of that building up towards the IRA National Championships."

NEXT UP
Cal will host its annual Alumni Day at the T. Gary Rogers Rowing Center next Saturday, March 14, before making its return to competition in two weeks' time at the San Diego Crew Classic. The three-day event will take place over the weekend of March 27-29 in Mission Bay.
