Cal Tops Georgia Tech in Round 1 of the ACC Championships

Cary, N.C. -- Cary, The No. 47 California Golden Bears (15-12) defeated No. 57 Georgia Tech (12-13) 4-0 in Cary, North Carolina on Wednesday. 

To begin the match, Cal jumped out to a 1-0 lead after doubles wins on courts one and three. On court one, No. 33 Alex Aney and Timofey Stepanov won 6-4. Meanwhile, teammates Bernardo Munk Mesa and Paris Pouatcha clinched the doubles point with a 7-5 victory. 

In singles play against the Yellow Jackets, Lenn Luemkemann won 6-3, 6-3 on court six to give Cal their second point of the day. Then, on court four, Bernardo Munk Mesa inched Cal closer to a match victory after he won in straight-sets 6-2, 7-6(2). Munk Mesa has won 16 of his last 18 singles matches. Finally, on court two, junior Timofey Stepanov wins 7-5, 7-5 to clinch the victory for the Bears. This is the second time Cal has defeated Georgia Tech this season.

Next: The Bears will face No. 34 SMU Thursday for the second round of the ACC Championships. Cal last faced the Mustangs on March 15 in Berkeley, where SMU won 4-3.
