Cal Falls To No. 4 Virginia In ACC Quarterfinals

CARY, N.C. - The No. 47 California men's tennis team (16-13) fell to No. 4 Virginia (20-3) 5-0 in the quarterfinals of the ACC Championship on Friday at Cary Tennis Park. 

In doubles play, the Golden Bears took the first match on Court 1, where Cal's Alex Aney and Timofey Stepanov won 6-3. Then on Court 2, Fryderyk Lechno-Wasiutynski and Tiago Silva clinched the doubles point with a 7-5 victory. The Bears are now 22-7 in doubles this season.

In singles play against the Mustangs, Bernardo Munk Mesa extended Cal's lead, with a 6-2, 7-5 victory over No. 124 Jangjun Kim. This victory was Munk Mesa's second ranked singles win of his career. Virginia quickly tied up the match at 2-2, with wins on Courts 1 and 5. Then on court 3, Cal's Silva defeated No. 48 Andres Santamarta Roig 7-6(5), 5-7, 6-4. Silva remained undefeated at the ACC Championship in both singles and doubles. In the end, Virginia took three-set victories on Courts 2 and 6 to take down the Bears.

Next the Bears will await their NCAA tournament fate.
