BERKELEY, Calif.. — The California baseball team split its season series with UC Davis falling to the Aggies 6-1 Wednesday night at Stu Gordon Stadium.
The Golden Bears (23-21) looked great out of the gates with freshman
Tanner Grove putting together a fantastic performance in his first collegiate start. The right-hander struck out the side in the first, getting all three batters swinging.
Catcher
Hideki Prather put the Bears on top immediately with a lead-off home run, his ninth of the season. Cal appeared to be cooking early, getting two more runners on base on a walk and a single but left them stranded.
Grove was brilliant over the next few frames striking out seven total in his 4.0 inning of work. The freshman scattered two hits and a walk in the no-decision with his only blemish coming on a solo home run in the fourth inning.
The Aggies (20-24) immediately jumped on the Cal bullpen scoring three runs in the top of the fifth, all with two outs. UC Davis added two in the seventh to take a commanding 6-1 lead.
Cal's offense was unable to make up any room, with only one Bear reaching base safely from the second inning to the sixth.
The Bears will be back at The Stu this weekend to host Virginia Tech in a weekend series that begins Friday at 6:05 p.m. PT on ACCNX.
