No. 23 Cal Ends Regular Season Vs. Stanford, At SMU

Story Links

The 23rd-ranked California women's tennis team (10-5, 7-3 ACC) hosts No. 36 Stanford in the Big Slam on Tuesday to complete its regular-season home schedule before traveling to face SMU on Friday in its regular-season finale. Results from the next two matches could have a bearing on Cal's seeding in next week's ACC Championship.

Cal is currently in sixth place with seven points in the conference standings, while Stanford is tied with SMU and Clemson for seventh place with six points apiece. If the standings hold, Cal would earn byes in the first two rounds of the conference tournament and start the tournament April 16 instead of April 15 or 14. Moving into the top four spots in the standings would mean a third bye and starting the tournament in the April 17 quarterfinals.

Last Time: Bears Fall To Virginia, Edge Virginia Tech
In its last two matches — both at Hellman — Cal fell 4-1 to ninth-ranked Virginia last Friday then edged Virginia Tech 4-3 on Sunday. After being celebrated in the Bears' Senior Day ceremony before the Virginia match, Cal veteran Berta Passola Folch defeated 82nd-ranked Vivian Yang 6-4, 7-6(7) in a setback against the Cavaliers. Against the Hokies, freshman Mille Johanna Moerk earned the second clinching win of her career when she beat Elizaveta Castillo 7-6(4), 7-6(6) to give the Bears the victory.
