Cal Tops No. 27 Stanford In Big Slam
STANFORD – The California women's tennis team captured its fifth consecutive victory Saturday when freshman
Sophie Hernandez earned the first clinching win of her career in a 4-3 result over No. 27 Stanford at Taube Pavilion. The match was Cal's first at the new Cardinal facility.
The Golden Bears – who snapped the Cardinal's six-match winning streak – improved their record to 6-4 (3-0 ACC). Stanford is 10-3 (3-1).
Cal's 46th-ranked
Jessica Alsola and
Mao Mushika started the Bears off well when they defeated Stanford's 37th-ranked Valerie Glozman and Connie Ma 6-2 at court-one doubles.
Berta Passola Folch and
Naomi Xu secured the doubles point when they bested Caroline Driscoll and Valencia Xu 6-2 on court two.
The Cardinal took a 2-1 lead with two early singles wins.
But Cal rallied to win three straight, starting on court three where 76th-ranked
Lan Mi topped 68th-ranked Valencia Xu 6-2, 7-6(1). That tied the match 2-2.
Naomi Xu untied the match when she posted a 6-3, 6-1 win over Chidimma Okpara on court five to give Cal a 3-2 lead. Hernandez, a San Francisco Bay Area product from Los Gatos, followed with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Morgan Shaffer on court six to give Cal a 4-2 lead and the official victory. In doing so, Hernandez became the sixth different Bear to clinch a Cal win this season.
"Everyone on the whole team did a good job, but we're pretty excited for Sophie – who's from Northern California – to clinch on their courts as a freshman," Cal head coach
Amanda Augustus said. "It's a special thing that she'll always remember."
Stanford added a win on court one – where Cal's 40th-ranked
Mao Mushika lost to sixth-ranked Glozman 6-1, 1-6, 6-4 – to make the final score 4-3.
"That was the best start we've had in doubles all season," Augustus said. "And it was a pretty good, ranked win for Jess and Mao. That set the tone and we competed hard at every spot. We had a really nice crowd too, with a lot of Cal people to counterattack the Stanford crowd. That was a high-level match we played, and I'm proud of the team for getting a big road win and another ACC win. We'll celebrate for a little bit and then get ready for another match tomorrow against SMU."
Cal hosts the 60th-ranked Mustangs on Sunday at noon PT at the Hellman Tennis Complex.
