Bears Claim ACC Swimmer, Coach Of The Year Honors
Okadome Named ACC Co-Swimmer Of The Year, Durden Earns Back-To-Back Coach Of The Year Honors
Yamato Okadome of the California men's swimming and diving team was named ACC Co-Swimmer of the Year, the league office announced Thursday afternoon. Head coach Dave Durden was also named ACC Coach of the Year for the second straight season in the Bears' second year in the conference.
Â
The sophomore from Chiba, Japan, followed up his ACC Freshman of the Year campaign from last season with another standout year in the pool. Okadome won three ACC titles in the 400 medley relay, 100 breaststroke and 200 breaststroke. He also set a conference record in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 1:48.87. Okadome was named the Most Valuable Swimmer at the ACC Championships and helped lead the Bears to their second ACC title in as many seasons.
Â
Okadome carried that momentum into the NCAA Championships, where he earned four CSCAA All-America honors and swept the breaststroke events for his first two NCAA individual titles. On day two, he posted a 49.90 to win the 100 breaststroke before returning on day three to capture the 200 breaststroke title in 1:48.61.
Â
Durden collected his second ACC Coach of the Year honor after guiding Cal to its ninth conference championship in program history.
