Cal Opens Postseason Against San Diego

No. 1 Bears Host Toreros In 1st Round Of Playoffs

The West Region No. 1 seed California rugby team will host eighth-seeded San Diego in the first round of the 2026 D1A National Collegiate Championships on Saturday at Witter Rugby Field. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. PT.
 
The Golden Bears open their 2026 postseason campaign with a 13-0 regular season record. Cal went undefeated against five of the seven West Region teams that earned playoff berths, defeating No. 3 Arizona (57-51), No. 4 BYU (64-21), No. 5 Cal Poly (101-0), No. 6 Grand Canyon (76-14) and most recently No. 2 Saint Mary's (66-35) two weeks ago.
 
Cal also defeated a pair of East Region teams that were selected for the postseason, claiming victories over No. 1 seed Navy (52-45), and No. 4 seed Army (70-18).
 
San Diego will make the trip to Berkeley having earned its first postseason berth in its first season competing in D1A after promoting from D1AA and have put together a 6-2-1 record in 15-a side action. The Toreros defeated Air Force (40-12), UCLA (40-19), Long Beach State (36-28) and San Diego State (48-7), and they claimed big victories over Sacramento State and UC Davis. USD tied UCSB in its first match of the season (27-27), and its only losses came to fifth-seeded Cal Poly (66-34) and sixth-seeded Grand Canyon (26-23).
