Cal Bested In Series Opener At Pittsburgh

Bears Come Up Short Despite Three-Homer Frame

PITTSBURGH – The California softball team fell to the Pittsburgh Panthers, 14-6, in six innings on Friday evening at Vartabedian Field.
 
Sophia Everett opened the scoring with a leadoff home run to give Cal an early 1-0 lead, but Pittsburgh answered with two runs in the bottom of the first to move in front, 2-1.
 
The Panthers added runs in the second and third to extend their advantage to 4-1.
 
Cal responded with a breakout fourth inning, launching three home runs to reclaim the lead. Gator Robinson and Kayli Counts hit back-to-back shots to tie the game, and Everett delivered her second homer of the night to put the Bears ahead, 5-4. Pittsburgh answered later in the inning to even the score at 5-5.
 
Carly Raven drove in a run with a single in the fifth to give Cal a 6-5 edge, but Pittsburgh drove in five runs in the bottom half to seize control, 10-6.
 
The Panthers added four more runs in the sixth to end the game early, 14-6.
 
With the loss, the Bears drop to 13-37 overall. Cal and Pittsburgh continue the series Saturday afternoon.
