The Golden Bears checked in at No. 6 in the latest CRCA weekly poll – their highest placement of the season – after a strong showing at the Big Ten Invitational on Lake Natoma in Sacramento two weeks ago. Cal's varsity eight beat a fifth-ranked Washington squad twice across the two-day event, while the 3V8+ competition was a battle between the two programs, with the Bears taking one photo-finish race and the Huskies clinching the other. The then-top-ranked Cardinal won all but one of its races at the same event.
Â
At last year's Big Row, Stanford, which was ranked No. 1, defeated then-No. 9 Cal in the three varsity eight and two varsity four races. The Cardinal went on to win the NCAA championship at the end of the 2025 season.
Â
Carrying on an important tradition of the Big Row, the Bears will dedicate Saturday's races to Jill Costello, the former Cal coxswain who passed away in 2010 at the age of 22 after a battle with lung cancer. Cal rowers will wear "Team Jill" tank tops in her honor.
